Bird Nests and Cover

Bird nests in Sligo have been found on rose, bush honeysuckle, and occasionally where vines and twigs intersect. The support plant in this photo was probably bush honeysuckle, growing along a dirt path next to the Creek. A barely visible strand of red plastic hangs at the bottom, left of center, and greenbrier runs in the foreground. A guidebook to bird nests exists, but most nests including this one are too variable to identify to species. To avoid disturbing nests, we are not removing shrubs between April and July.
A strong growth of native greenbrier looks messy but provides birdcover, substituting for some of the shrubs we remove. Photo taken on Parkside slope below basketball court.
